A south Evanston staple on Main Street with a deep-rooted community feel, named for the Dostoevsky novel and beloved by NU students and locals alike.
“Brothers K has the lived-in soul of a true neighborhood coffeehouse. Wood-paneled walls, mismatched tables, and a steady mix of students hammering on laptops alongside retirees reading the paper. Coffee is reliable, atmosphere is the draw.”
Studied for the bar exam here for three months. Outlets everywhere, and they don't kick you out.
New ownership since late 2024 has kept the vibe intact. Glad they didn't change anything.

Love the atmosphere. Love people watching inside + looking outside through their large windows. Always bright inside, a lot of sunshine, beautiful when it snows and beautiful when it is just a regular day. Love the simple bagels with cream cheese. Will remember this cafe when I move out.
I absolutely love this coffee shop! The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between cozy and lively, making it a great place to get some work done, catch up with friends, or simply relax and enjoy a quiet moment. Every drink is made with real care and attention to detail, and you can truly taste the quality and passion in every sip. It’s the kind of place that instantly feels welcoming and keeps you coming back for both the coffee and the overall experience.
I honestly had to pull out my phone and write this mid-sip because the cappuccino here is that amazing. It is easily one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Beyond the coffee, the atmosphere is great, but the staff really makes the place. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, respectful, and professional from the second I walked in. If you're in Evanston and need a perfect caffeine fix, this is the spot.
After standing in a long line at another coffee spot, only to discover they didn’t have soy milk (*cries in lactose intolerance*) I found Brothers K on Google maps and headed straight over. Brothers K came through with soy milk AND had a lovely variety of baked goods to select from. I had the Blueberry Pancake Latte and it was so fresh! Service was fast and the staff were so nice. I’ll definitely return.
This place has really come a long way since, I believe, the 'other brother' of the Brothers K took over. Apologies if that's not what happened. They finally got rid of the ugly Ikea Expedit shelf with books from the early 2000s! The chairs are slowly getting upgraded to, well, whatever it seems like they find-- which I highly approve of. Anything to give the place character, which, before, it completely lacked. It was at the top of frustrating lost opportunities and now its coming around. It only misses the 5th star because it lacks that last bit of cozy warmth/etc that the best coffee shops have. It's comfortable enough but not cozy. It's really bright. Maybe too bright. Before, it seemed to kind of not know what it wanted to be, it lacked a personality. And ALL great coffee shops have a defined personality. A vibe. And I'm just waiting for that last bit of vibe, especially given the 1920s building they're in. Until then the coffee is great, the pastries are good, they have Do-Rite donuts, the music they play is good. It's all good. Go for great.
