An independent neighborhood coffeehouse and roastery on Central Street in north Evanston, serving locally roasted beans, pastries, breakfast, and lunch.
“Backlot is the model for what a neighborhood roaster should be. They roast in-house, the staff knows regulars by name, and the Central Street strip around them has a small-town feel. Solid pour-overs and a tight breakfast/lunch menu that rotates seasonally.”

Their house roast is consistently great. Worth the trip up to Central Street.
Gets busy on weekends but seating turnover is decent. Free street parking nearby.

I popped into this spot recently and was genuinely impressed. The matcha was excellent—perfectly balanced—and the cortado was just as good, featuring some truly beautiful latte art. To top it off, their vegan scones were delicious and a must-try. Highly recommended!
Just brought my dog to the vet for a routine check and stepped by Backlot Coffee to wait for my dog ... and had a very nice dopio (double espresso) and a toasted Everything bagel with cream chease. The window seat was fun, watching people go by on a snowy cold day. I like that neighborhood coffee. And I took a bacon onion quiche home. Can't wait to eat it (needs to be heated up, might use the air fryer for a crispy quality.
They have a wide selection of drinks, pastries and local fare. The staff is very friendly and the vibe is a friendly neighborhood coffee house full of art, plants, fresh pastries and local fare. It’s always good to support local.
the coffee is good but I ordered a cold brew with milk, and they asked what milk I said whole. Then when they gave me the drink I asked why theres no milk in it, and they said I could pour it myself and there were pitchers of milk just sitting outside with flies buzzing around it
Incredible service and staff - my dad takes his dog every day to get a pup cup and they are always so excited to see him. And whenever my dog is in town they are so sweet to her! And they always remember her by name whenever she’s back! They both have the best time there and the coffee, matcha, and cookies are amazing. The dogs say the pup cups are five stars too
